The American India Foundation (AIF), a leading international development organization, whose mission is to accelerate social and economic change in India, recently honored AMD Chairman, President and CEO Hector Ruiz, with its AIF-US Leadership Award.
The award recognized Hector's leadership role in technology and his commitment to make empowering technologies available to a larger portion of the global population. Specifically, it called out his leadership of AMD's 50x15 initiative, AMD's goal to help enable affordable Internet access and computing capabilities for 50 percent of the world population by the year 2015.
AIF presented the award to AMD at a formal fundraising event on Oct. 8 in San Jose, Calif. AMD was one of several companies that helped the grant-making organization raise more than $1 million to help fund numerous programs designed to improve education, livelihood and public health in India.
Accepting the award on Hector's behalf, Tom McCoy, AMD executive vice president of legal affairs and chief administrative officer, said, "For Hector and AMD, the AIF-U.S. Corporate Leadership Award is incredibly significant because it acknowledges that business leaders share an obligation to foster positive change globally. The AIF and AMD understand this responsibility and share a common vision of advancing social and economic change by empowering people through all kinds of growth-from individual growth to enhanced education and job creation."
AIF presents two Corporate Leadership awards each year-one to a U.S. corporate leader and another to an Indian corporate leader-for their leadership, entrepreneurial endeavors and commitment to corporate social responsibility. This year's India Corporate Leadership award recipient was Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, chairman and managing director of Biocon Limited, who was recognized for her role in promoting initiatives to support environment, education, health and welfare-related issues in India.
